What causes corruption?
What causes brutality?
What causes ignorance?
What causes prejudice?
What causes cruelty?
Several years ago, I reached the conclusion that there is no such thing as genuine evil, a conscious and self-aware opponent to good, but that everything that is called evil is self-centeredness to one degree or another.
I don’t know if I’m right or not. It was the only conclusion that allowed me to believe in G-d. If we are born self-centered, it’s something that we need to grow out of, by example and by teaching. When that doesn’t happen, empathy doesn’t happen and harm gets done for no reason. What prompts people, anyone, to recognize good from bad, and to want to be good rather than bad, to care?
